EP Review: Evil Warriors – Schattenbringer (Into Endless Chaos Records)

Into Endless Chaos Records proudly presents the new EP of Leipzig/Germany based Black Metallers Evil Warriors!

The Schattenbringer EP will be released on July 20th 2020.

More of an album than an EP, it might only be 4 tracks long but Schattenbringer is around about 45 minutes long. That’s a lot of black metal for your buck and there’s no denying that Evil Warriors deliver a memorable slice of effective heaviness.

What we have here is an EP that has a really raw and old school sound. Almost distant and garage like, it’s reminiscent of the classic days of the scene. Especially in regards to the drums but it’s clearly output from a band rooted in the modern times.

That means we end up with a much more layered release that isn’t afraid to show off the array of riffs and atmospheres it has. It makes lengthy efforts sound way more eclectic and interesting as there isn’t a constantly repeating formula beyond the overall speed and ferocity.

That might seem nigh on impossible after you’ve battled through the first 3 tracks and see the 21+ minutes of – coming your way. 21+ minutes of brutal black metal? It almost seems offensive but it’s not at all what you might expect.

It’s a slow burn of a track. Ethereal and ringing notes echoing through dead halls for the ages. It’s fascinating to listen too and really does a great job of building anticipation. The tension rises as the odd melodies get more intense and forceful. This is not like anything heard elsewhere on the EP, instead sharing more in common with drone. It’s maddening but very unique.
