EP Review: Evil – Ride To Hell: Reissue (Mighty Music)

First we have “Evil’s Message” which will be re-released in CD and LP (four different colours: black, teal, yellow, marbled grey) by Mighty Music, on June 11th, 2021. Then we have “Ride To Hell”. Featuring the first demo tape from Danish heavy metal band, Evil.

Released originally in 1983, as well as the live release “Live on Stage”, recorded in Copenhagen in 1985. “Ride to Hell” will be re-released in CD and LP (four different colours) by Mighty Music, on June 11th, 2021.

We had a lot of positive things to say about Evil’s Message and its remastering but acknowledged it was more for the ‘superfan’ then anything else. Even if it also served as a solid entry point for new fans too. This second remastering is undeniably for the superfan only though.

Three demo tracks that sound like demos even with a solid remastering at Angioni Studio (Tygers Of Pan Tang, Mike Tramp) and five live tracks, there’s plenty more Evil to get your teeth sunk into.

As far as classic heavy metal bands go, Evil really should have been a bigger deal. Although they do share a lot in common with countrymen and heavy metal compadres Mercyful Fate, more people are likely to get along with Evil. Simply because the vocals are less polarising.

It is what it is though, and Evil are still going strong, enough so that this remastering is sure to please a ton of fans. Even if the demo tracks are rough as hell. Still, it is fun to hear this band in their infancy. The real draw is the live stuff though. Recorded in 1985, it does sound like it was but is far more understandable because it is live. There’s something so cool about hearing a live crowd from so many decades ago. To put that into context, this reviewer was a year old when this show happened.

That makes it one cool release.
