EP Review: Eremit – Desert of Ghouls (Transcending Obscurity Records)
German sludge/doom metal band Eremit released a ground-breaking debut in ‘Carrier of Weight’ which was widely regarded as some of the heaviest sludge/doom music recorded.
Retaining the same mind-numbingly heavy sound, Eremit trudge forward with a brand new EP called Desert of Ghouls.
Yes, Desert of Ghouls is heavy. Mind-numbing, fuzzed out, teeth-chattering heaviness in the filthiest and grimiest of ways. From ear-splitting feedback to sticky molasses-like riffs to percussion that is the equivalent of having a boulder dropped on you. All this within the first few minutes of Beheading the Innumerous and before the howling and bleak vocals have even arrived.
By time it’s near 9 minute run comes to an end, you won’t feel very well at all.
However, City of Râsh-il-nûm looks to lighten the load on the mind with a drawn out and eclectic melody dominating proceedings for over 5 minutes of its 12+ minute run time. When it does kick in, the buzzing and fuzzing is as abusive as you could hope for.
As a sign of things to come and the development of Eremit, Desert of Ghouls is a really strong effort.
