EP Review: Djinova – Apocalypsis Infinitum (Self Released)
Djinova are a four-piece death metal band from the UK Midlands who have been going from strength to strength over the last few years. Their rise saw them progress through the 2019 Bloodstock Metal 2 the Masses competition, where they won and played the New Blood Stage that year.
Building on that momentum, the group have now unleashed their debut EP ‘Apocalypsis Infinitum’.
Old-school death metal, new-school death metal, a bit of deathcore and plenty of passion, results in one of the finest heavy EPs of 2021. Djinova have been tearing it up live for some time now and this release just confirms what many already know about them.
Four tracks of fiery death metal ferocity, Djinova start off hot and don’t cool off for even a second. The blast of deathcore-infused heaviness and old-school influences set things ablaze with the savage Ingest the Gospel (Preach the Disease). An opener to crack open a pit or two, regardless of where you currently are.
A Day in Exile moves things into even heavier areas, thrashy and groovy almost, although the guttural nastiness is the dominating feature. Before Tale of the Dead has Djinova really lean into the old-school sound of death metal. They’re bloody great at it too as this is pure head-banging gold.
Keen to showcase that they have more to offer, the final track Reign of Apathy has the band go big, not just in length, but with the feeling of grand progressive touches and brutal savagery. A humongous finale that features all the good stuff that gets under the skin. From ripping riffs and tearing hooks, to pulverising drumming, to a scathing vocal style… this is class.
