EP Review: Degtras/Jeff McLeod – Dead Dream City (Wood and Stone Productions)

Released at the end of 2017, Dead Dream City is two-track spilt from dark drone act, Degtras and Jeff McLeod of drone/ambient metal band, Clawing.

Dead Dream City 2

Degtras’ track is a haunting & oppressive number that builds atmosphere as though it’s a horror movie. You can picture dark treks through forests, musty corridors where evil things lurk around every corner and hidden depths in a swamp. The tone lightens slightly after a few minutes as if a ray of light has come shining through the darkness. It’s not escape though…far from it. Very impressive.

Jeff McLeod’s track is an electronic piece called ‘Nethescurial’. A song inspired by the Thomas Ligotti story of the same name.

Again offering a dark tone, Nethescurial is a bit more sci-fi sounding in its approach. Here the empty vastness of space is what comes to mind. Lost and alone, floating in silence. The electronica creates visions of ancient celestial wonders on par with H.P. Lovecraft. It’s a journey of bright colours and stunning effects that gives to way to horror. So memorable.

This style of music isn’t for everyone. You have to be willing to lose yourself in it & let your imagination run. What Degtras and Jeff McLeod offer is an experience, one that sticks in the mind long afterwards.
