EP Review: Decay – Modern Conversation (Fox Records)

The Liverpool emo newcomers Decay are pleased to announce that they have signed to Birmingham independent label Fox Records and will release their debut EP Modern Conversation on 5th July 2019.

The record’s title, Modern Conversation, resonates with the reference to alcoholism on the lead single, and was taken from an art history lecture that Reposar attended.

“It was the title of a section about an intricate painting of people fighting each other and generally acting aggressively,” he explains. The design would often be displayed within a communal wine jug, the idea being that after drinking the wine the picture would be displayed at the bottom, reflecting the drinker’s current state. “This resonated with me heavily at the time of writing the record,” says Reposar, “as I’ve been surrounded by alcoholism for most of my life.”

Not moving too far out of the ‘emo’ comfort zone, Decay hit plenty of the high notes in regards to expectations of what this style of music might sound like. However, it’s a tag that often comes with a certain amount of derision in some circles. Unfairly so and to lump Decay into that isn’t very fair. What they actually are is a rock hybrid that deliver a mix of reflective emotive numbers that sometimes bounce all of the place with feel-good vibes.

This isn’t really noticeable until New Again. A great effort that makes up for the sub-standard opener Sentiment. The more layered rock work continues into Slow Decline albeit this being one with a shadow in its heart. Probably the most ‘emo’ sounding track of the bunch.

Looking to bring things back up a notch, Been Blue gives it a good go by being a little more energetic and throwing out some frantic riff work. The huge sing-along finale exudes power and position in all the best ways. Before Lullaby ends the EP on a dour, yet memorable note. The rhythm pretty and a little catchy even if it is tinged with sadness.
