EP Review: De Arma – Nightcall (Silent Future Recordings)
Swedish gothic-rock band, De Arma explore the different polarities of the spectrum of melancholy on their new EP, Nightcall. It will be released on May 6th, 2022 via Silent Future Recordings.
Drawing comparisons to the likes of The Cult, Sisters of Mercy and even Paradise Lost, there’s an 80’s glow to De Arma’s goth-rock sound. Something enhanced by the synth effects and eerie, smooth vocal style. It’s very easy to imagine this music pumping out of a shadowy underground club filled with all manner of nightcrawlers.
At least, that’s on the face of it but spend a bit of time with De Arma and you’ll find an EP that is surprisingly layered. One that puts melancholy front and centre but extends the experience through lengthier and varied examples of atmosphere. You can smell the incense and taste the dry ice here.
With tracks that pass the six-minute mark and in one case, the nine-minute mark, De Arma certainly leave an impression here. Showcasing that Sweden has much more to offer the rock and metal world, and that it can be deliciously inviting.
