EP Review: Cult of Sobek – Petsuchos (Trepanation Recordings)
Cult of Sobek follow in the well-established path of UK doom power trios but create their own deep trance tirades thick with atmosphere and ritualistic darkness. A unique monochromatic psychedelia laced with covert crocodilian melodies that rip and tear while monolithic death growls and pained yells rise from the underworld. This is crushing doom, dank and malevolent, with a malign aura dominated by the left-hand path.
Merging occult themes of past and present through a looking glass of Victorian spiritual curiosity and Crowley era Thelema, Cult of Sobek’s live presentation is a visceral rite of smoke and dread, an exploratory journey to the deepest recesses within, punishing and brutal, transcendent and mystical.
The band’s debut EP ‘Petsuchos’ will be released on cassette, CD, and digital through Trepanation Recordings on July 22nd, 2023.
Oof, this is doomy. This is murky. This is evil.
Cult of Sobek are here to pour gloom directly into ears, entrancing everyone who spends time with them, and making the experience of listening to them feel wicked. This EP features three tracks. Three varied examples of unmitigated darkness, raw and primordial, oozing out of the cracks of the Earth.
What really appeals here is the impressive blend of psychedelia with doom, two comfortable bedfellows, but really enhanced by Cult of Sobek. The group are willing to experiment and that makes it a more exciting prospect. Especially if you are the type of person who likes to wallow in thick and choking darkness.
It’s rare that anything doom, specifically doom that is so intense, leaves you wanting more but that is very much the case here. Cult of Sobek demand your subjugation and after hearing what they have to offer on Petsuchos, it’s hard to deny them.
Join the cult – you don’t have a choice.
