EP Review: Creeper – Christmas (Roadrunner Records)
Let’s be honest, if there was ever a Christmas song that Creeper were going to cover, it was goning to be Fairytale of New York. You can’t quite imagine the Southampton pop-punk/punk-rock/emo band knocking out Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas is You!
That being said, how you feel about that Fairytale of New York will have a huge bearing on how you feel about Creeper’s cover. Simply put, it is a literal cover with very little of Creeper’s own spin on in. Is it a bad cover? No, in fact they do the original song justice with both Will & Hannah delivering on the vocal front.
It’s just a pity they didn’t use this opportunity to put a big Creeper stamp on it. Instead we get Will occasionally trying to slur his words to sound like original singer Shane MacGowan. However, massive props to Creeper for changing one particular line.
The single is completed with Same Time Next Year & Blue Christmas. The former is a forgettable effort that at least has the huge Creeper choruses that have become their staple. The latter is dour even by their standards. Two minutes of soft melody with Will crooning about having a blue Christmas without you. Not a patch on the Elvis original.
