EP Review: Cortége – Chasing Daylight (Desert Records)
Post-Western, heavy ambient doom duo Cortége has signed to New Mexico’s Desert Records. The label will release the band’s new EP Chasing Daylight February 26, 2021 on CD and digital formats.
Two tracks, two parts. Cortége make their Desert Records debut with a strong showcase of their elaborate ambient doom sound. Chasing Daylight Part 1 begins in epic fashion, sounding more like a film score where the hero is arriving to save the day. It shifts for a more mellow and dusty rhythm and stays like this for some time before getting a touch fuzzier. The reverb is much more prominent and it leads to a much more intense bursts of ambience to lead into the next part.
Chasing Daylight Part 2 brings similar vibes as Part 1 flows into it perfectly but takes a more chilled and eerie stance. Slow and thoughtful effects, the sense of hidden mysteries that will be uncovered if you listen on, is strong. Like the light dwindling at the end of the day, slowly but surely, Cortége begin to grind to a halt as the track goes on. That this occurs with half the track still to run suggests much is to come but this is dragged out to excruciating lengths. By the end, the light is but a crack and darkness has fallen.
Very clever. Very unique.
