EP Review: CHRMR – Respective Orbits (Self Released)

Playing post hardcore sludge, Rochester, New York’s CHRMR (former/current members of Sulaco (Translation Loss) Contrarian (Willowtip) & Burn Everything (Dullest) released their new EP, Respective Orbits.

CHRMR 2

The opening tones of Fits suggest that we’re about to listen to some deep and troubling doom-infused sludge but after a brief bit of spirit crushing metal, CHRMR flip the track on its head with some high-energy hardcore. The unique and unconventional rhythms keep things on edge before Thermals takes things in a much different direction.

The clean and soaring style of vocals alongside mammoth sized hooks are in sharp contrast but thanks to chugging riffs and a frantic finale it still resembles enough of what made the first track so noteworthy.

Their sound really finds its feet with 58 Rue Madame and Bleeder. Both showing the same level of heavy sludge groove with flashes of hardcore wildness (such as at the end of Bleeder). Cold Star comes next with a snarling vocal style alongside screeching guitars and booming percussion that shares as much in common with classic punk as it does the NOLA bands.

Respective Orbits wraps up with Laugh, an unexpected ballad that gets its strength from its mournful guitars and vocals. A strong finish.
