EP Review: Cavalera – Bestial Devastation (Nuclear Blast)
Max and Iggor Cavalera should need no introduction. Known from their time in Sepultura (as founders), Soulfly (Max only), Cavalera Conspiracy, and so much more. Once again, they have teamed up under the name Cavalera to re-record Sepultura’s debut EP, Bestial Devastation (1985) and debut album, Morbid Visions (1986).
Both re-recorded releases also feature a brand-new song. They will be released on July 14th, 2023, via Nuclear Blast.
Can you remember where you were when you first heard this release? Was it your first taste of Sepultura? Were you hooked immediately?
There is a strong argument to say that these re-recordings aren’t exactly necessary but that doesn’t mean they aren’t warmly welcomed. Max and Iggor have been very careful here. Ensuring the original raw energy and thrash-infused mayhem is right at the forefront. Yet, the five re-recorded tracks have never sounded so clear and the brothers are on form.
From the ominous intro of The Curse through to the manic riffing of the title track, to the thrash head-banger that is the wonderful Antichrist, the savage speed of Necromancer, and the crude chaos of Warriors of Death. Bestial Devastation is still as strong as it was, and by not messing the formula much at all, Cavalera have ensured this version can comfortably sit alongside the original.
Though it’s not quite done as the duo have also added a new track on called Sexta Feira. Turning back the clock to deliver a riffy head-banger that doesn’t seem out of place in any way.
Overall, this re-recorded EP is a strong reminder of just why Sepultura turned so many heads back then. Even if the band they would become is so much more impressive than what is featured here.
