EP Review: Callas – Days (Self Released)
Callas, a post rock/metal and experimental band from Cork, Ireland, will release their new EP, ‘Days’, on July 26th, 2024.
It’s no secret how impressed I was with the title track of this upcoming EP, and it firmly put Callas on the rock and metal map as far as I was concerned. Happily, it wasn’t a one-off track though and Callas showcase a wonderful and powerful poignant style of post rock and metal across the three tracks of this EP.
It begins with the title track, a staggering piece of music that oozes glorious gloominess. The rougher and rawer instrumental side of the band contrasting impressively with the dreamy melodic style of vocals. It’s downright beautiful and it’s a rare thing to find so much emotion packed into a four-ish minute track. It’s the track you play a person to show them just how good a band Callas is.
It’s not alone, even if it is so spectacular that nothing could compare. Sunlight comes mightily close though. Callas adding even more of a flourish to their deeply moving post sound. Delivering an immense amount of power, sliding in more experimental aspects, and leaving the mind awash with vibrant colours created by a soundscape that takes hold of the soul firmly.
Finally, it’s Porous, and Callas ending their EP in very melodramatic style. Melodies at the forefront but delivered in an unconventional way. Alongside patient vocals that drift through the ether of the mind disconcertingly. Of the three tracks on offer, it is certainly the most unique sounding.
A contender for the best EP of the year based off the title track alone. Then, you add the other two tracks, and it’s hard to see Days being topped. It’s a stunner of a release that leaves you wanting so much more.
