EP Review: C.I.A Hippie Mind Control – We Are the Evil Thoughts of God (Self Released)
Never one to sit still for too long, the psychedelic and progressive death and doom band, C.I.A Hippie Mind Control are back with a brand-new EP called ‘We Are the Evil Thoughts of God’.
For years and across a wide array of releases, C.I.A Hippie Mind Control have found fascinating ways to challenge me. Cresting a tidal wave of wacked out noise that hits, time and time again, with the kind of force usually saved for bands on the more extreme end of the metal spectrum. They are a heavy band but it’s their unusual approach and progressive slant that changes things so significantly. For the better, in my opinion, as they continue to showcase a genuinely unique soundscape through their unwavering commitment to challenge themselves and the listener.
This is how we end up with an EP as thick and sinewy as this. An EP littered with moments of genuine oddness. An EP oozing mysterious atmosphere, and an EP that delights in ways that only a C.I.A Hippie Mind Control fan can understand.
Of course, while long term listeners will find themselves more at home here, and regular purveyors of progressive music can connect with what is displayed here, it doesn’t mean C.I.A Hippie Mind Control are going through the motions. These four tracks find the group in a truly dark mood and more expressive than ever when it comes to balancing raw death, mood altering doom, inspired melodies, and twisted atmospheres. It’s brilliant and further proof that C.I.A Hippie Mind Control are something special.
