EP Review: Burn Down Eden – Epiphany (Seek and Strike)

German melodic tech-death metal band Burn Down Eden will release their new EP, ‘Epiphany’, on December 6th, 2024, via Seek & Strike. This is the successor to their ‘Dismal’ EP, which was released earlier this year, and together, the two EPs make one flowing album.

Looking for an end of year reason to head bang until your brain feels like it’s going to fall out? A reason to gurn and grimace with intensity? A reason to raise a fist in the air and join a chorus of voices proclaiming the brilliance of Burn Down Eden? Epiphany has what you need, which, if you listened to Dismal earlier in the year, will be a very comfortable listen as the two parts go together easily.

With Dismal, Burn Down Eden offered up a set of tracks filled with vibrant melodic heaviness with errant and effective bursts of technical intensity. Sometimes anthemic, sometimes chaotic, but always enjoyable. Which is exactly what we get with Epiphany, another set of furious sounding head bangers that are as infectious as they are violent.

An infectiousness that doesn’t just come from the melodies, but the unrelenting pace of each track. Burn Down Eden wanted these tracks to be fast, and that is certainly what we get with the likes of Epistrophy and Fake News for Breakfast. The latter of which is one of the strongest tracks across both EPs with its manic riffing and drumming. Though there may be nothing quite as memorable as Tears Of Persephone, with its big melodic guitars that give the track a more melodeath flavour overall.

Then there is the self-titled track, which layers its devastating approach with screamingly intense guitar work. Before Suckbox ends things in a cacophony of heavy and fast noise, made all the better for the brief, but powerful, guitar solo. It’s banger track after banger track, and the emphatic statement on a damn fine year for Burn Down Eden.
