EP Review: Breaky Boxes – From the Shelter (Self Released)
Breaky Boxes are an indie folk band hailing from Rouen, France. Founded in 2014 and with more than 150 shows under their belt they draw inspiration from American and Irish folk culture. Their debut EP entitled ‘From the Shelter’ was released on March 28th 2018.
The band revealed:
“This EP draws its inspiration from American and Irish folk culture. We favored the use of
typical instruments of the genre, such as the banjo, the harmonica and an acoustic guitar. All,
by adding a touch of modernity with a keyboard and a synth, then in the melodies voice,
pretty pop.”
“The whole EP was recorded by ourselves, in our studio, at home.”
“This EP is the result of a shift made by the band in the style of our music. We wanted to
devote ourselves to a music that was more “optimistic” and aimed at making people live
something. A music that touches and provides more feelings, joy, as melancholy.”
What’s really nice about From the Shelter is how it makes you feel. It’s got plenty of melancholic moments but the overall EP is filled with positivity leaving you with a warm feeling. That’s clear from the upbeat strumming of Land of Brothers before Million Brave Heroes pulls a little at the soul. The latter of the two is a hell of a song, the soft vocals and sweet melody having the desired effect.
While I Feel Good doesn’t really follow those two tracks being a bit forgettable, Come Back Home ups the folky sound to impressive levels. A foot-tapper if there ever was one before Down’s Up sees Breaky Boxes play their indie hand thanks to sweet keyboard melody.
An excellent EP says goodbye with Farewell, a track that brings the smiles.
