EP Review: Born Without Bones – NYE (Pure Noise Records)

Born Without Bones have announced a new EP called ‘NYE’, which features covers of the bands favourite New Years themed songs. The record is out on the 28th of December via Pure Noise Records.

Speaking about the new EP, the band said:

We’ve been kicking around the idea of doing a New Years themed EP for a long time. We have a lot of good collective memories whether it be parties at Jim or Johns old apartments or playing Mercury Lounge in NYC with Hotelier and Oso Oso a few years ago. New Years Eve is one of our favourite holidays of the year and coincidentally is the subject of some of our favourite songs. We started with a long list of songs and narrowed it down to three that we felt we could interpret in our own way.

Records themed around the New Year are a rare thing so this is an exciting listen even if it’s just a short EP featuring three covers. Three covers that you’ll either like or loathe depending on how you feel about the original tracks. Even if Born Without Bones do enough to make them their own.

Their version of Motion City Soundtrack’s Together We’ll Ring in The New Year has a nice burst of energy to get the party started. However, it’s their version of The Zombies’ This Will Be Our Year that really stands out. A great track given even more of a relaxed and chilled out vibe that conjures up images of a warm home, surrounded by good friends and loved ones, everyone ringing in the New Year with promises and hopes to do and be more. If there’s one track to check out, it’s this.

Finally, the energy is turned back up a notch for a cover of Death Cab for Cutie’s The New Year. An upbeat but reflective track that Born Without Bones make their own. Even if the original is hardly what you might call a classic.
