EP Review: Black Lesion – The Human Essence (Self Released)
Black Lesion, the hard-rock band from Edinburgh, Scotland, have released their brand-new EP, ‘The Human Essence’.
It’s always exciting times when Black Lesion release new music, and while some of this EP has been drip-fed over the last few months, anticipation is still high. Not just as an opportunity to hear these tracks again (if they’re not on regular rotation already) but to hear the new stuff, and to hear it all as one complete piece.
Black Lesion are a band who do mighty good rock things, infusing their music with plenty of passion and groove. Immediately bringing the body shaking vibes with the infectious energy of Hornets Nest and the exciting rhythmic Delusion. The latter is a firm fan favourite, but over time, the same will certainly apply to the former too. Big riffs, smooth vocals, thumping bass lines, and punchy drum beats, there’s so much to enjoy here and it really doesn’t take long for the Black Lesion sound to take hold.
The middle track is Lost it All and it brings a heavier and moodier sound to the forefront. This is where a more alt-flecked rock sound is present, but don’t be fooled into thinking it lacks groove. Black Lesion always have groove and this track is no different, it just so happens to have a bit more ‘grr’.
Offering up something a bit more mellow, more ballad-like, but still impressively powerful, the penultimate track is Pity. An emotional listen that delivers heart-wrenching melodies, a hardy uptick in instrumental power, and some of the band’s strongest vocals and lyrics to date. Before this excellent EP wraps up with the EPs grooviest track of all in Engulf. Black Lesion showcasing gleefully fun bass hooks, playful guitar melodies, and a kicking singalong chorus.
Five banger tracks making this EP well and truly worth the wait.
