EP Review: Bitch Hawk – ABC of Rock (Adrian Recordings)

Hardcore/punk crossed with an eccentric display of metal and so much more, Bitch Hawk are back! Their new EP ‘ABC of Rock’ will be released on April 7th, 2023 via Adrian Recordings.

This is Bitch Hawk and, if they’re not already, they are about to become your new favourite band.

Simply because they don’t conform in any way. Something that every band wants to say but few are actually capable of it. Bitch Hawk play the music they want to play and the end result is a perplexing but fascinating display of sounds.

Kicking off with undiluted punk and hardcore speed on the title track, the manic intensity of the band is stupidly thrilling. Yet, every time you think they’ve hit the highest gear possible; they find another. The frenetic energy doesn’t distract from the progressive weirdness but few won’t be head over heels in love with these guys already.

A love that will only grow as this EP goes on. Bitch Hawk blending abrasive punk with thrashy ferocity and mathcore twists and turns. Then it starts to head into darker locales and you start to picture sludge and black metal but the band drag you out of the pit before you sink. Only to throw you headfirst into it with Passing Out. Carnage like this shouldn’t sound so damn anthemic.

A throwback to thrash and speed metal blended with their hardcore punk makeup, Scanner is a sweat-drenched orgy of heavy head-banging chaos. One that transitions into a multifaceted experience as the ‘math’ side of the band rises. Then the tempo switches and the sludgy side of the band emerges to drag things down to deep depths. What an insane and brilliant piece of music.

All good things must come to and end and it’s with great aplomb that Bitch Hawk close out this EP. Tapping Out ensuring that no-one is leaving this EP without a few cuts and bruises. Heavy and heinous. What’s not to love?
