EP Review: Binge – Toothache (Self Released)
Manchester, UK based balaclava clad instrumental math/noise rock duo Binge (Rob Sewell on guitar and veteran drummer Mark Heron) have unleashed their long-awaited debut EP ‘Toothache’.
One run through of Toothache and it becomes abundantly clear why those who have experienced their sound, rave about it. The instrumental duo combine mesmerising technicalities and creative progressive sounds with abrasive heaviness and bad-mannered intensity. It’s noise-rock but not as you know it.
Toothache offers up six uniquely interesting tracks that subvert expectations and challenge the listener. Where every element of Binge is showcased in delicious clarity. The guitar and drums working in perfect harmony while also being as inharmonious as possible. Though don’t let that fool you into thinking the EP is unstructured or lacking in groove, energy, and catchiness. Toothache has a lot to offer and it makes it undeniably clear that Binge are something quite special.
There’s a lot on offer here, this is no ‘short change you’ kind of EP and Binge captivate and exhilarate with eclectic bangers like Metatronian, Monosyllabic, and Acrostic. If you only have time to listen to a handful and want to get an idea of what’s on offer, these three tracks will tell you a lot about who and what Binge are.
