EP Review: Binary Order – Thrown Away (Papa Roach Cover) EP (Self Released)

Binary Order is a solo project that was started in 2008 by London based solo musician Benjamin Blank as a way to combine his love for multiple genres, fusing the intensity of alt metal, the haunting atmosphere of ambient soundscapes and the piercing electronics of darkwave. Creating the soundtrack to our descent down into this hell of our own making, as we become ever more disconnected from ourselves and each other with each day, succumbing to the unrelenting fear that mankind is too far along to stop these horrors that we have set in motion. This is the sound of Binary Order.

Binary Order has announced a brand-new album called ‘The Future Belongs to The Mad’, and is expected to release sometime in late-Winter 2023. In the meantime, to tide fans over, a new EP ‘Thrown Away (Papa Roach Cover) EP,’ will be released on June 27th, 2023.

We’re still riding the high of Binary Order’s last album, ‘Messages from the Deep’, so the announcement of a new release is very exciting. An EP with the feature track being a Papa Roach cover? Not so much, unfortunately.

This is purely personal taste. You’re not going to find many positive words said about Papa Roach here, even if their influence is incredibly important. That being said, it’s an interesting choice of songs for Binary Order to cover and Benjamin Blank is so talented, he can surely make it interesting at least.

Which it is. Thanks to the a more aggressive take and heavy use of effects. You’ve never heard Papa Roch quite like this. Love ‘em (and plenty do) or loathe ‘em, Binary Order pays tribute and delivers an original take on the song.

The rest of the EP features three remixes of tracks from Messages from the Deep. The first being a clever blend of electro-mania and atmosphere with Parasite (Bleeding Mix). Then there is A Good Death (Arcadmix Remix), which is a bit more laid back and moody. Before the EP closes out with The Hands of Time (Irreversible Mix). The original is still on regular rotation, and while this enigmatic and atmospheric-laden version won’t change that, it’s still a very cool alternative.

It’s always a joy to hear the creativity of Binary Order, even if it doesn’t always land personally. We can’t wait see what comes next.

1. Thrown Away (Papa Roach Cover)
