EP Review: Bile Caster – Writhing Between Birth and Death (Cursed Monk Records / Masochist Records / Eggy Tapes)
Formed in August 2019, Bile Caster are a 3-piece sludge/doom band based in Leicester, England. Since putting out a demo and a split release, Bile Caster have become a staple in the UKs heavy underground scene and now, on October 4th, 2024, they will release their debut EP.
Called ‘Writhing Between Birth and Death’, this three-track EP will be released on CD and digital by Cursed Monk Records, vinyl by Road to Masochist Records, and cassette by Eggy Tapes.
One of the most substantial EPs of the year from a doom and sludge perspective, Bile Caster force their thick sound down the throats of anyone brave enough to press play on this release. Vomit is guaranteed if you stay, but it’s the kind of nasty sound that is simply impossible to walk away from.
Delivering the most lethargic of doom sounds, the filthiest of sludge vibes, the most uncomfortable of fuzz layers, and the most jarring levels of noise, Bile Caster’s goal seems to be to make you cry. Not in a ‘feelings’ sense, but in a ‘kick your ass’ sense. It works. This is three legit examples of an ass-whooping that never seems to end, especially as the process is so sluggish.
What makes it so appealing though? It’s a combination of Bile Caster’s incredible ability to make such an auditory experience this uncomfortable, and their willingness to push the limits of doom and sludge accessibility to the point of reason. There have been heavy releases this year, there have been ugly releases this year, and there have been nasty releases this year. Yet, all pale in comparison to Writhing Between Birth and Death. The heaviest, ugliest, and nastiest of releases.
