EP Review: Atræ Bilis – Divinihility (Transcending Obscurity Records)

Atræ Bilis from Canada are ingesting the best elements of all the styles of death metal and spewing forth an amalgam that turns the genre inside out. There is no template for their kind of music. Divinihility will be released on August 14th 2020 via Transcending Obscurity Records.

It might be a bit of a stretch to say that Atræ Bilis are turning the death metal genre inside out. After all, it’s a style of metal that has already seen so much experimentation that we have popular sub-genres based around it already. However, there’s no denying that Atræ Bilis’ are lighting a candle in the darkened gloom and offering something that really does grab the attention.

They have grabbed a number of death metal styles and managed to mix them all effectively to craft something very interesting and something that is very tasty. That it’s just 6 tracks (22 minutes long), makes the bitesize chunks even easier to digest.

Kicking off with a short, flurry of intensity (Gnode) before Sulphur Curtain gets dark and the demonic vocals are introduced. The sharpness of the riffs cutting through the bleakness like a hot knife through flesh.

With barely a pause, Phantom Veins Trumpet comes next and shows a hell of a lot more technicality. However, the absolute ball-busting and head-crushing highlight comes next with Extopian. A beast of a track.

Alongside Upon the Shoulders of Havayoth and A Ceremony of Sectioning, it’s a fair conclusion to say this is an EP that all fans of extreme metal sound be checking out.
