EP Review: Atoll – Prepuce (Unique Leader Records)
Emerging from the scorched wasteland of the Sonoran Desert in 2014, Phoenix based slammers Atoll have been crushing eardrums with their unique blend of brutal death metal. Now, after signing with death metal experts Unique Leader, Atoll are an active force in the slam scene and in pursuit of global domination with new EP, Prepuce. Out on April 15th, 2022.
Guttural and garish slamming death metal. That’s all you need to know. Atoll have been doing this for a while now and this new EP just confirms them as one of the giants of the slam scene. From the moment the vomitus explosivity of Cirrhosis for Dinner kicks in, there’s no doubting that Atoll aren’t making any changes to the formula that has served them so well over three previous album releases.
Though, if you’re new to this band, it’s important to point out that Atoll aren’t your run of the mill slam death band. As they have an innate catchiness that makes their ferocious blasts, breakdowns and grinding savagery all the more listenable. They also have their tongue firmly planted in their cheek as a lot of the tracks feature amusing intros and, well, you just have to look at the track titles.
Though, that silliness doesn’t overshadow what is a limb-crunching and skull-crushing listen. Atoll move at one pace and it’s the kind of speed that turns you inside out. They deliver a consistent level of ruthlessness and make no apologises for it. It’s a slamming death metal release that causes retching.
