EP Review: Async Await – Irretrospective: Part 2 (Chameleons Risen)

Async Await’s EP collection continues with Irretrospective: Part 2. Releasing on November 17th, 2023, via Chameleons Risen, the second part of this tripart offering sees the project’s distinctive use of electronics with fuzz and distortion develop.

Project mastermind Mike Sorensen comments:

Irretrospective: Part 2 centers around the experience of friendship failing as situations change and we make the decisions that will define the rest of our lives. These songs move through stages of arrogance, criticism, judgment, reflection, and regret. Through this writing process I discovered that the criticism I had for other people was often a projection of my own insecurities and fears.

We enjoyed Irretrospective: Part 1, admiring its dynamic blend of alternative rock, electronica, and distortion. The variety it showcased is also a major factor of this record, and it starts in peppier, grunge-tinged fashion with Comfort Zone. Sorensen’s vocals are particularly strong here too.

Following that strong start, both Common Ground and Tenuous bring forth some of the more dramatic and melodious elements of the artist. Tracks with a lot of heart and soul in them, and tracks you can relax to, taking in all of Sorenson’s strong lyrical content.

Before this EP wraps up with something a bit groovier, a bit heavier on the distortion, and a bit more lively. It’s got a punk-rock twist, feeling particular passionate, and is more layered than first expected.

Another solid release from Async Await.
