EP Review: As The Sun Falls – Where The Silence Reigns (Self Released)
Two years following the release of their ‘Far Beyond’ EP, Finnish melodic death-metal collective As The Sun Falls will return with a new EP titled ‘Where The Silence Reigns’, scheduled for release on October 13th to coincide with band’s forthcoming European tour.
Eschewing the traditions of melo-death, while simultaneously living up to the expectations that many demand from the genre. As the Sun Falls can certainly be called their own thing and this three-track EP gives way more than most would expect.
Beginning with an epic, the folky melody at the start of The Wanderer tells the listener that this might not be a ‘traditional’ melo-death piece of music but once it transitions, fans will feel right at home. Regardless, what this track has is an incredible amount of depth. As the Sun Falls are an intensely captivating band and all the moving parts combine to create something truly exceptional.
It would take something truly special to match that opener, let alone top it, but As the Sun Falls has the writing chops to come mightily close. Two tracks, Trees As My Gravestone and Where The Silence Reigns, both unique, but both featuring an array of creative sounds, Thick atmosphere, lavish melody, and intense expulsions of emphatic death metal that leaves a strong sense of satisfaction.
Misery has never sounded so good.
