EP Review: Annisokay – Abyss Pt. II (Arising Empire)

Annisokay, the dynamic German rock/metal band, are back with their brand-new EP, ‘Abyss Pt. II’, out April 11th via Arising Empire.

The follow-up to ‘Abyss Pt I’, a slice of emphatic excellence (released September 22nd, 2023), ‘Abyss Pt. II’ continues Annisokay’s modernised anthemic ways with six brand new efforts that will delight both new and old fans.

Kicking off with a dark, but vibrant, blast of melody and metal, their ability to add drama to their core-twisted ways is on display here, and it’s great. The lyrics of this one are interesting, but it’s the thick vein of darkness running through it that makes it so much more notable in the end. Although the absurdity of the breakdown at the end might make you laugh out loud through sheer delight.

Whereas that one was a bit more experimental, Never Enough is a straight-forward banger that delivers energised heavy intensity and a chorus that soars. This is what I mean when I call this EP anthemic. Although there’s nothing wrong with the more melodic focus of Oblivion, especially as this is a track with layers of atmosphere and a manic ending. Nor does Into the Gray disappoint, not when it’s so charged with emotion and delivered with such impressive power.

Speaking of power though! It’s Any Given Day who feature on the savage sounding H.A.T.E. Annisokay dig into some heavier parts of their personality and go for it, metalcore style. It’s a groovy stomper with clever moments of melody infused within, resulting in yet another absolute anthem.

Finally, and so damn satisfyingly, it’s Inner Sanctum and a showcase of modern metal, heightened drama, epic and exciting, creative, and exceptionally memorable. Which is not just the summation of this finale, but the EP as a whole. Annisokay have done it again, but of course they have, they’re a great band.
