EP Review: Alpha Boötis – Jump to Alpha Boötis (Self Released)
Science fiction fuelled band Alpha Boötis bring their debut release into the future with a reboot called ‘Jump to Alpha Boötis’.
A a complete reinvention of the first Alpha Boötis EP. Conceived originally as the soundtrack to a fictitious space exploration video game, these five songs are now the musical backdrop of an exciting science-fiction movie, alas still a fictitious one.
Jump to Alpha Boötis will be released on September 24th, 2021.
Such a great idea comes with some heady expectations. I want to be transported to sci-fi futures and pasts. I want to be sent hurtling through the cosmos, my mind assailed by imagery and sounds beyond comprehension. Where I experience a world that is both imaginative and real enough to picture.
Does Jump to Alpha Boötis deliver?
Oh, hell yeah, do they! The eclectic mix of sci-fi synth, spacey effects, brass and woodwind, distorted guitars, moody atmosphere, punchy percussion and jazzy kicks is fascinating. The opening title track’s upbeat instrumental nature is an instant classic. Whereas the following Ecumenopolis is a bit moodier and darker but still peppy and very animated.
Talking of weird though, Wormhole Gas Bar really does conjure up an image of dancing and rocking out in a galactic space club. A phenomenally strange but addictive piece of music. Before the synth returns with force for the sinister energy of Serpens Nebula and we get something truly tranquil and fantastical with Circling the Belt of Orion.
The word unique should never be used lightly but it certainly applies here. The five tracks do exactly what I wanted and then some. The icing on the cake being a stonkingly good cover of Gojira’s Another World – the only track to feature vocals.
