EP Review: Akkadian – The Devil Has Evolved (Self Released)
Coming at you from Cambridge, England, riff merchants Akkadian are poised to break out with their formidable new EP, The Devil Has Evolved, out October 27th, 2023.
Going for the ‘shock and awe’ approach, Akkadian drop three momentous tech-tinged and groove-tainted bangers with this new EP. Yet, there is so much more to this EP, and even though it’s only three tracks long, it leaves a lasting impact. Partially because each does hit with all the force of a moon being dropped on your head and partially because each track has fascinating psychedelic undertones that tie into the band’s interest in ancient history, mixed together with inter-dimensional and spiritual travel.
Kicking off with the blistering Second Sight, the depth to their heavyweight sound is on immediate display. A head-banger with a lot of layers, the refinement here is truly outstanding. Then along comes the title track and Akkadian up their game with some excessive heaviness that pounds with groovy intensity and dreamy melody.
Finally, it’s Teardrop, and Akkadian add even more heart, soul, and passion into something surprisingly emotive. The melody of this track is very pretty, and it has some imaginative touches that keep things interesting right up to the end. An end that sounds huge.
An end that comes far too quickly, but that at least means Akkadian have left one hell of an impression.
