EP Review: Agremorta – Anomalia (Self Released)

Blending alternative, industrial, and progressive metal, Agremorta will release their debut EP, ‘Anomalia’, on March 15th, 2024. A concept release telling a short story surrounding war, focusing on challenging themes around the perspective and arrogance of ‘just’ wars.

Offering up a sound that is not easy to categorise, Agremorta deliver a very creative effort with this debut EP. One that has many different ideas and many different approaches to metal, all while telling a story. It’s a polished progressive beast of an effort, and promises an exciting future for this band.

Beginning with industrial atmosphere and effects, the EP gets off to a very hot start with Obsidian Reveries. An intro that builds and builds in intensity, the industrialised sound getting darker and heavier as it goes on. Just as it seems ready to break, we move into the next track, Ploratus Umbra, and with it comes such progressive and heavy delights. From scathing heaviness to dreamy melody and no small number of remarkable twists and turns, this is one hell of a track.

They’re an imaginative duo with a constant boundary pushing focus, and after hearing the next track, Adrocitas, it’s quite hard to believe this is their debut EP, such is the refinement of something so dynamic.

There’s no ‘short-changing’ here as each track is big and varied, but it leaves you wanting so much more as Vertex Membrana ends things in emphatic fashion. Progressively emphatic fashion, with daring blasts of ruthless sounding heaviness, layers of alt-focused effects, and dramatic sounding melody. It’s easily the most challenging track of all, but it still fascinates and shows just how advanced this band is.
