EP Review: Abiuro/False Gods – Abiuro/False Gods Split (Doom Fujiyama)
Eastern and Western sludge-lords unite! Sludge-doom affront False Gods and sludgecore outfit Abiuro are preparing to unleash their ever-grimy upcoming split EP via Doom Fujiyama on April 7th, 2023.
This split is less an example of the listener sinking in a sludgy pit they stumbled upon and more of an example of a sludgy tidal wave that has devastated humanity. The two tracks from the filth that is Japan’s Abiuro starts with the garish and guttural horror of Blind Faith.
The eventual showcase of guitar groove doesn’t make this one feel any less soul-destroying as the grim tempo and screeching vocals dominate. Their second track is Apophenia and it isn’t any easier to listen too. The rumbling and grumbling guitars makes for a tension-heavy experience, the drums add a bit of pep, but it doesn’t make it any less alarming. Yet, once again, when they go for it, Abiuro showcase some sludgy groove that puts a big smile on the face.
Now, USA’s False Gods would normally be the selling point of any split, but they’re up against it here. Yet, as always, this sludge-doom outfit deliver epic heaviness that is weaved with melody. A more refined band, their brand of heavy is much more palatable, will also being unashamedly intense. All of this, and so much more, experienced on their first track, Time Poisoning and built upon with more atmosphere on 0% Success Rate.
Two bands from two different countries and cultures, united by the common goal of delivering penetrating sludge heaviness to the masses. If you have never heard of either band, this release is a great way to get to know them both.
