Demo Review: Witchgöat – Umbra Regit (Morbid Skull Records)
Umbra Regit is a three track demo from blackened thrash metal metal band, Witchgöat. Mixing old school European and Latin American thrash metal, the brutality and the precariousness of the 80s extreme metal, and the melodic ideas of the 90s blackened death metal. It will be released under the flag of Morbid Skull Records on July 31, 2018 as a prelude to the debut full length album.
As raw as freshly torn skin and flesh, Emanations from the Underworld is disgustingly abusive in its savage noise assault. Behind the wall of death infused thrash metal though is a bit more imagination that harks back to a darker and more ‘black metal’ sound. Nowhere as unlistenable as you might have first thought going in.
The same rings true for Proliferation of the Dark Souls, a terrifying prospect and a lesson in how to produce thrillingly aggressive metal. Booming riffs, scarred bass hooks and vocals that howls nothing but bleakness.
It’s nice to see Witchgöat stretch their muscles though with the final track, Towards The Gûlgaltâ. A short piece of guitar melody that will haunt your dreams for weeks to come.
As a precursor to a full album, Witchgöat have certainly created anticipation and excitement for what will follow.
