Demo Review: Old Painless – Demo Songs (Self Released)
Old Painless are a heavy rock band from Manchester, UK. While a new band, it’s members have been around the local Manchester hard rock scene block for the last two decades, playing in bands such as the blistering sludge of Levien, Atlas, and Anvil Warface, the punk rock band The Shadowcops, or the heavy stoner rock vibes of Gaul and Dave and Nathan’s Blastronaut.
Old Painless are here now though, and as well as playing live, they have recorded a collection of tracks, aptly titled ‘Demo Songs’.
The UK scene continues to produce quality rock and metal bands at a rate that makes it downright difficult to keep up. So much so, that far too many slip through the cracks. Happily, Old Painless is not one of them as rock music that you can groove to is always welcome. Just one aspect of Old Painless that helps them standout and ensure a live showing is now necessary.
Don’t be fooled by the ‘demo’ part of Demo Songs. These aren’t poorly produced pieces of music where a band is still trying to find its sound. Old Painless know what they want to do, and do it bloody well. Lovably so.
You do have to remember that the members of Old Painless have been around, and once you do, the high quality of the four body-shakers and head-bangers on offer makes so much more sense. That being said, they’ve worked on trying to differentiate themselves, and aside from hearing some of their influences, there’s not many bands grooving quite like this in the UK at the moment.
This is a great introductory release, everyone that hears it will be eagerly waiting for what comes next, and when Old Painless rock up to their town for some live shows.
