Weesp are 5 piece that formed in Belarus in 2008. To date they’ve recorded 3 EPs & recorded 2 singles. They’ve built up a bit of a following based on their live shows, something that is often raved about.
In their own words: Weesp have developed their own style, mixing hard, yet fluted modes with modern trends in electronic music and expressive vocals.
1. How did you get started as a band?
It started from school times. We already were friends, and when some of us started to play instruments, others joined and we created a band. Soon enough we realised that it is more than just a hobby. We started to develop our own sound, playing gigs, recording. The band is more like a family for us now.
2. How would you describe your sound?
We make authentic alternative rock, using heavy guitar riffs and fat synth sounds. Although in general it’s rather dark, it’s also very energetic and sincere. The lyrics impressions, world and people around, moments that shake us, that make us feel alive – common, but important things. We made a long way to form a sound that we can call ours and we like the recording process and we approach it with a lot of care. Nevertheless we consider our main strength are our live performances. We get a lot of positive feedback after each.
3. What bands/artists would you say have influenced your style of music?
Neurosis, Baroness, Mastodon, Muse, Deftones, Tool, Nine Inch Nails, Joy Division, Black Sabbath, Massive Attack, and many more.
4. Has the rise of YouTube & music streaming helped or hindered you as a band?
I think it helps. Social media nowadays puts the performer so close to the listener like never before. We think the main goal for a band is understanding who their listener is and how to reach them. We have just started our advance in the musical market, and we feel good about it.
5. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not making music?
You mean when not making music and not partying hard? 😀
In fact we are busy people. Everyone has their own affairs, you know, usual stuff mostly. Some of us build a business of their own. Other hobbies: Mi and Stak like strike-ball, Lex, for example likes boxing. And certainly we all love travelling and adventuring, meeting new people around the world.
6. What are your future plans musically? Tours?
Now we are finalising new songs for the new album which has the working name of “Black Sails”. Soon we’ll go to a studio to record it. We just got back from a European tour and plan to play a big solo gig in our home city of Minsk and then go on a tour in Ukraine. After it will be a big European tour to support an upcoming album or some singles from it.
