Band Interview: The Ocean Beneath
Games, Brrraaains & A Head-Banging Life are pleased to bring you an interview with alternative rock band, The Ocean Beneath.
1. How did you get started as a band?
The Ocean Beneath started life as a shared ideal between Rich Blacker and myself, Matt Burnside. We both wanted to create new music moving away from our previous ventures with an 80’s influence and a modern push on the production. We also wanted to bring in as many other people as possible along the way for collaborations so we did just that. We released our debut EP in 2019 and have worked with loads of great artists including Nath Jackson, Fran Minney, Mik Crone and more. In Feb of 2020 Rich wanted to take some time away from the project so now I’m just pushing things forward and doubling down on the collaborations.
2. How would you describe your sound?
An 80’s inspired mixture of powerful analogue synthesis, melodic sweeping vocals and huge grooving percussion!
3. What bands/artists would you say have influenced your style of music?
Gunship, Talk Talk, HVOB and Lydmor, these are some of our personal favorites but artists like Daft Punk, The Prodigy and The Chemical Brothers have all played a part in driving forward electronic music over the years to get us where we are now
4. Has the rise of YouTube & music streaming helped or hindered you as a band?
We absolutely love YouTube, right now I’m watching a band called Ichikoro that was suggested after watching this insane guitarist Ichika Nito and it’s bloody amazing. We use YouTube a lot and I think it only helps in getting music out to an audience.
5. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not making music?
I’m producing a few other peoples music right now which is great fun but completely away from the music side of things I love watching 80’s films, cooking and eating good food.
6. What are your future plans musically? Tours?
Tours are pretty much off the cards now with another full lockdown hitting the UK as of tomorrow. I think the future for us is to push our new single Skin for the rest of the year then come back early next year with the collaborations we’re currently working on. Go have a listen to Skin ft. Fran Minney and check out the video over on Youtube, thanks for your time.
