Band Interview: The Deathtones
Games, Brrraaains & A Head-Banging Life bring you an interview with the rocking horror heavy melting pot of music that is The Deathtones.
1. How did you get started as a band?
We got together under a different name in mid 2019. It was a much more mainstream punk project, but the songs were solid. After a while our sound started to lean more toward the dark, horror end of the spectrum, so we decided to pretty much let the first act , for lack of a better descriptor, “die” and then be reincarnated as “The Deathtones”, a hard rocking, mask wearing horror group.
2. How would you describe your sound?
We have a lot of different musical elements in our material. We blend elements of classic metal, power metal, anthemic theatrical metal, horror punk, pop punk, even some boogie woogie and classic rock n roll. It really all depends on what the song needs as far as a stylistic direction.
3. What bands/artists would you say have influenced your style of music?
Misfits, The Other, Danzig, Iron Maiden, Sabaton, Powerwolf. Also going back to rock n rollers of the past like Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash.
4. Has the rise of YouTube & music streaming helped or hindered you as a band?
It’s a good thing and a bad thing, really. People don’t buy as many albums anymore and seem to be more into singles, you know, something you can throw on a playlist as opposed to a 45 minute rock opera haha. But at the end of the day we’re just happy that people are listening, no matter what road they take to get to our music.
5. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not making music?
We all have different interests, from DIY crafts and projects to video games to television to just living the family life (kids, dog, white picket fence, etc).
6. What are your future plans musically? Tours?
We have so many plans for the future. Right now we don’t have any show dates or anything. It’s difficult to get quality shows around us that will actually make it worth your while to be there. We see a lot of local horror bands traveling all over the place and playing anywhere that will take them. That’s awesome for them that they want to go the old school route, but we’re all in our 30’s and have jobs and responsibilities at home, so we can’t just load up the van and drive to Ohio or Delaware for a 30 min set. We’re gaining a lot of exposure online marketing and promoting our band to more people than would ever be at a live show. We’re not saying we don’t want to play live, we just want it to be worth it for us to do so.
We do however release new music almost every month and we have a lot of songs in the vault that are itching to be released, so stay tuned!
