1. How did you get started as a band?

Long story short: Segmentia started as a cover band around 2012 and we played all kind of music, for example Finnish pop music but also music from Paramore, Nirvana, Avenged Sevenfold, Porcupine Tree… just mentioned few. I had just ended things up with my old band, Celesty, and at some point, I thought that now is the time to start making my own music again. This time I wanted to compose music with a female vocalist. It took some time but on 2019 we released our first EP “Shanghai”, in January 2023 we are releasing our second EP “Alone”.

2. How would you describe your sound?

We are calling our music “pop metal from the north”. That means melancholic, yet hopeful soundscape in our music. We Finns are quite melancholic people and in Segmentia we are combining mostly pop, electronic and symphonic elements to metal.

3. What bands/artists would you say have influenced your style of music?

All members have their own influences but when I started to form Segmentia I wanted to combine bands like Thirty Seconds to Mars, Amorphis, Paramore, Dimmu Borgir… Someone said that one can find some Muse from our music, and I think that this was a compliment.

4. Has the rise of YouTube & music streaming helped or hindered you as a band?

That has worked for both: with and against us. It is good that we can be everywhere, and people can find us, but that means that they mostly have to know what to look for. I think that the best promotional value lies in live shows, but nowadays booking people are counting followers when booking. So, that is a vicious cycle. We need some time, and we need to do some hard work to get things balanced, but we’ll get there.

Luckily, everything is possible for you if you just keep working hard.

5. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not making music?

I like to listen audiobooks while driving, going for long walks and go to gym, watch documentaries, TV-series… And of course, spending time with our animals! I’m learning about horses atm, they are so cool!

6. What are your future plans musically? Tours?

We have a few shows booked to early next year in Finland. We are heading abroad in the future, and we hope to get there as soon as possible! Of course, release our second EP “Alone” in January 2023 and do lots of shows. Then release our debut album and tour as much as possible! Our goal is to be an active, international band.

Music is life!
