Band Interview: pMad
Games, Brrraaains & A Head-Banging Life are pleased to bring you an interview with goth/darkwave/post-punk artist, pMad.
1. How did you get started as a band?
pMad is the solo artist title taken by Paul Dillon from Galway, Ireland.
Spent a life writing lyrics, recording pieces of music and being a general music lover!! In a few bands including The Suicidal Dufflecoats but never released any music.
Along comes a pandemic, lockdowns and the improvement in technology, he creates a band with Liam Martin called ‘The Greeting’ – piecing together the sounds and lyrics of a lifetime and with the help of great people, Liam Martin (Zedakube Recording), Dominik (Protonaut Studios) and Pepe Ortega (Elith Mastering Labs) and lifetime ambition is happening.
2. How would you describe your sound?
People will hear different influences in the music, they will hear what they are familiar with.
An 80’s sound/vibe with modern twist, is how I feel it could be described as.
It has been described as ‘The child of The Cult and The Mission’ or a modern mix of Matt Johnson (The The) and Cathal Coughlan (Microdisney and The Fatima Mansions). I will happily take those comparisons.
3. What bands/artists would you say have influenced your style of music?
My musical influences are so broad and I think it will come across in the singles and album.
Dark goth, new wave/80’s, metal, indie and alt rock. A sucker for a bass line.
Big Cure-head in the day and still Goth (The Cure, The Sisters of Mercy, etc), that looked out of place at Indie ‘A House’, Fugazi/Sonic Youth/Dinosaur Jr, loving Tom Waits to Suicidal Tendencies. Varied inspiration coming out in what I create.
4. Has the rise of YouTube & music streaming helped or hindered you as a band?
It was a conscious decision to make an attention grabbing video and thankfully the song has been viewed over 1,500 times in a week. The rise of all the different forms of listening, watching and finding music has completely changed. Unfortunately it has changed from the Record companies ruining the music industry to now the huge corporate non entities robbing the artists. A vicious circle until the customer decides that the artist deserves more of the slice. We have not reached that cycle yet.
5. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not making music?
Never too far away from music, I am a huge music fan, if there was never pMad. Always listening to music, going to gigs. Do love sport too and spending time with my wonderful, beautiful, funny family. They are so proud of me and I am so proud of them.
6. What are your future plans musically? Tours?
Nothing planned, all brand new to this. Covid of course has restricted the couple of opportunities that have come pMad’s way. But quite happy to wait and get the releases out and be confident that there is a big enough audience to play too. Loving it all so far, everyone has been so kind. Long may it last?
