Band Interview: Octalux
Games, Brrraaains & A Head-Banging Life are pleased to bring you an interview with Hurley who plays guitars and does vocals in the rock band, Octalux.
1. How did you get started as a band?
Octalux started out as a project of mine and along the way I added Chase and we added Brent and the 3 of us added Tony.
2. How would you describe your sound?
Our sound is a composite of everything we find cool and interesting in music, some country, some pop, a lot of rock of all eras. What we create really just comes from the point of inspiration and then gets cycled through the interpretation filters of the other three who ever brings up an idea.
3. What bands/artists would you say have influenced your style of music?
For me it’s KISS. I love tons of bands. I love tons of music and different albums and songs by many different types of artists, but for me it has to have passion. Don’t tell me how badass you are in a song or a riff, make me feel it. I’m addicted to feeling another person’s passion and when it shines thru without you stating it, that’s what gets me going.
4. Has the rise of YouTube & music streaming helped or hindered you as a band?
Oh man, the internet and YouTube and streaming services and iTunes are both a blessing and a curse. Sooooooo many bands, soooooo much music and anyone can get their art out with ease. The negative is it’s very easy to get swept away quickly by just the sheer volume of new stuff that comes out every day. Without a diligent attitude and constant engagement, anyone will be soon forgotten. The plus as I said is the ease of use and the ability to let people on the other side of the world experience what you have to offer and that’s super cool!
5. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not making music?
I’ve written a book of poetry. I’m involved in a movie project that I’m co-writing and co-producing and starring in. I talk to my mom every day and check on her and take care of my dog Dumpster.
6. What are your future plans musically? Tours?
We talk about stuff all the time and we’d like to go on tour around the world. To see all that this big ball (or flat disc depending on who you ask, haha) has to offer. Musically we’re gonna push and promote our new EP “Noize in the Blood” this year. Then go back in the studio and either do another EP or a full album, but that’s undecided as of yet.
