Band Interview: Nightbird Casino
Games, Brrraaains & Head-Banging Life bring you an interview with vocalist/guitarist James Moore of experimental post-punk band, Nightbird Casino.
1. How did you get started as a band?
Almost by accident – Nightbird Casino existed in some form as far back as 2017, when I (James Moore – vocals/guitar) started a side project with a drummer from another band. We didn’t originally conceive it as being a “band” per se, it was just a way to explore musical ideas that were too far outside the wheelhouse of our current band. We would meet every weekend in a studio in Anaheim and fuck around with different ideas we had – surf rock, classical, electronic … eventually we decided to give the project a name and over time it evolved into the four-piece band it is today.
2. How would you describe your sound?
We get a lot of comparisons to goth rock/post punk revival bands: Bauhaus, Joy Division, She Wants Revenge, Interpol. I think there’s a little truth to that. Maybe post-punk inspired art rock with an experimental edge?
3. What bands/artists would you say have influenced your style of music?
We come from different backgrounds and pull from all sorts of influences: definitely 90s alt rock, shoegaze, post-rock, the 2000s NYC indie scene – but I think we draw just as much inspiration from classical, jazz, electronic, hip-hop. It would be fair to say we are all big Radiohead enjoyers so they’re a big influence to be sure, if I had to pick just one artist.
4. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not making music?
I like sleeping and drinking coffee, sometimes simultaneously. Most of my free time is spent on music, if it isn’t Nightbird Casino I’m probably working on my solo project or helping someone else with their music. I’ve dabbled in film production as well.
Mandy (keys) is working on an avant-garde ambient project, and is also into geology and wine; Landon (bass) teaches music lessons and produces for other artists when he isn’t working with Nightbird, and Oliver (drums) has been busy building out his own drum studio.
5. What are your future plans musically? Tours?
We’ve got a new single – Radio Anxiety – dropping in about a month and LP3 is in the works, hopefully for a late 2023 release date. We’ve got so many shows lined up this spring – (dates/venues at nightbirdcasino.com/live) and we’re planning a West Coast tour to support LP3 so stay tuned!
