Band Interview: Maidon
Games, Brrraaains & A Head-Banging Life are pleased to bring you an interview with eclectic, alternative indie rock band, Maidon.
1. How did you get started as a band?
The band was created by singer-songwriter Aldan Torres following a period of fresh creativity and after having taken some time off music. Settled in the London area, Aldan took guitarist and arranger Ivan Pela on board – an previous collaborator from past projects.
2. How would you describe your sound?
I would say Maidon’s songs are eclectic, all of them within pop and rock music but quite different from each other. Nowadays, it is very common that this kind of music is labelled as indie as well. Anyway, we try to do powerful catchy tunes but we do not pay much attention to in which specific genre it will be included.
3. What bands/artists would you say have influenced your style of music?
I lived in full the Brit-pop era and I listened to a lot of music from the 80’s and 70’s. British and American pop-rock music has always been my main influence and the base of my music. David Bowie, Prince, U2, Suede, Radiohead, or more recently Arcade Fire are a clear reference to understand the sound of Maidon.
4. Has the rise of YouTube & music streaming helped or hindered you as a band?
It definitely has helped as nowadays you can distribute your music and promote it on social media and dedicated platforms. 20 years ago you could not do any of this unless you were supported by a record label. Let’t say that music has become more “democratic” but at the same time you are a drop in the ocean and it is more difficult to get heard and discovered.
5. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not making music?
To listen to new music and to try to think on new ideas – music never goes off my head. Apart from that, I mainly spend time with my family and I try to enjoy every minute I share with my kids.
6. What are your future plans musically? Tours?
The plan is very clear, we would like to thrive in this business and end up being able to make a living in music. We are going to carry on writing songs, working properly to get an even better sound and trying to reach as many people as possible. However, one thing is what you plan and another thing is what it really turns out, let’s hope both things coincide this time.
Regarding tours, there are no dates right now but we are pushing for a proper tour to introduce the band to fans and media.
