Band Interview: Leon Marshall
Games, Brrraaains & A Head-Banging Life are pleased to bring you an interview with singer/songwriter, Leon Marshall.
1. How did you get started as a band?
I started playing guitar at around 6 (not that you can tell from my skill level today!) there had been an Elvis Presley special on Stars In Their Eyes and I wanted to go on it & meet Matthew Kelly!
I continued to play and started to write and played my first paid gig when I was around 16, I gigged regularly at local Open Mic Nights and Folk Clubs for a couple of years and then stopped music to focus on Art and Sculpture. I then picked the guitar back up again several years ago and have been gigging and writing ever since…although I never made it on to Stars In Their Eyes!
2. How would you describe your sound?
I would say my music has a Country-Pop sort of feel. It’s been described as Dr Hook meets Jamie Lawson, and I’m happy with that!
3. What bands/artists would you say have influenced your style of music?
My list is of influences is endless, Elvis, Fleetwood Mac, Sheryl Crow, Jack Johnson, Luke Coombs…I could go on forever!
4. Has the rise of YouTube & music streaming helped or hindered you as a band?
I think its probably helped, it’s such a quick and easy way for fans to listen and potential fans to discover, it’s a great way for people to expand their music tastes quickly and easily.
5. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not making music?
I enjoy being outdoors, walking, either out in the middle of nowhere where I can be alone with my thoughts, or somewhere busier where I can people watch. I take a lot of influence from the people I meet and see day to day, strangers. From a woman walking past me laughing on the phone to a guy in front of me in the queue at the local shop shouting at the cashier, I like to give them a back story and sometimes it’ll spark an idea for a song.
6. What are your future plans musically? Tours?
So, I’ve just got back from a few days in the studio recording some new songs which has been great, one about love, one about loss, and one about the Devil. I can’t wait to share them with everyone. Other than that, my plan is to keep writing, keep trying to better my writing and then hopefully sometime soon get back out there playing to big crowds!
