Band Interview: Fatality

Games, Brrraaains & A Head-Banging Life are pleased to bring you an interview with high energy nu-metal/hip-hop/heavy metal band, Fatality.

1. How did you get started as a band?

Fatality was formed in 2016 by Josh, Gareth and ex-drummer Chris. In 2017 we recruited bassist Matt Shynn and subsequently recorded our second EP which we released in 2019. We did a small tour of the ‘Prey’ EP in aid of MIND and raised over £500. In November 2019 we parted ways with drummer Chris and joined forces with Jordan Maze who now completes our current lineup. Since his recruitment in late 2019 we’ve written and performed a new set of tracks with Jordan as well as some Fatality originals. We played our first show with Jordan on a live stream in Summer 2020.

2. How would you describe your sound?

I’d describe us as a mix between nu-metal, heavy metal, hip hop and anything else we decide to throw into our music at the time. With high energy and a big sound!

3. What bands/artists would you say have influenced your style of music?

We draw our influences from loads of different avenues. Musically some of those would be bands like Lamb Of God, Limp Bizkit, Machine Head, Fear Factory, Papa Roach and Slipknot. As far as non-musical influences go we usually draw that from events in our lives that directly affect us or things we strongly believe in. This usually translates pretty well into performance as we can convey our energy and emotion about each song over to the audience.

4. Has the rise of YouTube & music streaming helped or hindered you as a band?

It definitely helps bands reach a much wider audience. Local and grassroots acts have a much better chance of reaching fans far and wide with the rise of streaming. It has 100% helped us as a band in that way. We have had people listening to our music as far as Africa, USA, Asia etc. And luckily we’re not in it for the money otherwise this answer could have been the complete opposite. Unfortunately that is the downfall of our streaming culture. Bands and artists do not get paid fairly for streams and that is something that really needs to change in the future.

5. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not making music?

I’m (Josh) a live sound engineer and recording engineer so it’s not very often that I’m not doing something music related. However in my spare time I like to cook, read crime novels or comic books and play video games. These are all things that stimulate my mind so I’m always thinking of lyrics, stories and themes to incorporate into our music. I like to draw influence from every aspect of my life. This helps me write songs that are meaningful to me and helps me convey emotion in what we write, connecting to our audiences more.

6. What are your future plans musically? Tours?

Well, at the moment we’re unable to play unless there’s a completely reduced capacity which isn’t what we’re all about so the simple answer is no tours. As soon as we’re allowed to perform in indoor venues/outdoor venues or at festivals then we will be tirelessly booking and performing at shows again.

We always have new music in the works. We have a few tracks that are ready to be released and a load of new material that we’re constantly working on and refining. ’The Lesson’ will be released on October 5th, then ‘Indemnify’ and ‘Eight’ will be released over the next few months with the idea that we will accumulate these and more tracks into a 3rd EP/Album at the end of the year ready for when live music is back.

We’re 100% just going to keep doing what we enjoy doing. Writing tunes that we all enjoy to play, performing passionately for our audiences and having a damn good go at smashing through all and any glass ceilings that come before us.

For those that want to check us out you can catch us on Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple Music and Deezer as well as YouTube and as far as I’m aware, pretty much any streaming company out there! Just search Fatality Band UK and you’ll find us.
