Band Interview: Circus Wolves
Games, Brrraaains & A Head-Banging Life are pleased to bring you an interview with post-punk/rock band, Circus Wolves.
1. How did you get started as a band?
Circus Wolves formed while at the University at Leeds in 2013. Originally consisting of band members Guy on vocals and Cameron on drums, the band moved through a number of different players in the early days, performing as the outfit, ‘Plastic Rabbits’. Jack joined Plastic Rabbits on guitar in 2013 and the group performed throughout the Leeds university scene with varying success. After some further internal changes, Jim took up guitar duties alongside Jack in 2014 and the band began to work on their new sound.
Post-university, the band returned to their hometown of Manchester and began working on their presence within the vibrant Manchester music scene where they remain to this day. After working with several different bass players, Ben joined the band in 2019 to complete the current outfit and complete the sound for the latest EP offering.
2. How would you describe your sound?
Brooding, Post-punk, melodic, frenetic, and emotive. Northern heritage meets modern vibrancy.
3. What bands/artists would you say have influenced your style of music?
We’re a Manchester band through and through. The Manchester scene has a well-deserved reputation as home to some of the best acts going. The music scene is just as amazing as it always has been. There are so many great artists basing themselves within the city. You’re really spoilt for choice! Bands like Kashmere, Ist Ist and Saytr Play are definitely ones to watch!
Our sound also takes some major influence from the likes of bands such as The Smiths, The Strokes and The Cure. We all have some pretty varied music tastes as a group too and this gets everyone bringing loads of interesting sounds to the mix too.
4. Has the rise of YouTube & music streaming helped or hindered you as a band?
We would say helped in most ways. It makes it so much easier to share new music to new audiences and that’s really handy. On the other hand, that convenience tends to make it difficult to draw in new crowds to our live shows. It takes a big commitment when it comes to making loads of content and that can be challenging at times.
5. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not making music?
We’ve all got loads of different hobbies outside of Circus Wolves. There are some big football fans within the band, so that would certainly be up there. A few of us a keen record collectors too, which really gets the creative juices flowing when it comes to new music. Jim practices Ju-Jitsu, Ben’s into cycling, Jack’s into design and animation, Guy’s addicted to Manchester City and Cam knows his way around a kitchen.
6. What are your future plans musically? Tours?
With everything currently in lockdown, it’s been a pretty disappointing time for playing live. We’re itching to get back onto the live scene and miss it terribly. As soon as things start to get back to normal, we have really big plans to get back out there on the live scene and play our latest EP live to our fans.
As soon as we’re able to get back out there, we will be.
