Band Interview: Aspherium
Games, Brrraaains & A Head-Banging Life are pleased to bring you an interview with melodic death/thrash metal band, Aspherium. You can read our review of their incredible new album, The Embers of Eternity here.
1. How did you get started as a band?
We started out with myself (Marius, guitars and vocals) and Torgeir (Bass, backing vocals) in 2007 looking to start a new band. We had already played some cover songs live with this great drummer Bjørn Tore. He nailed his audition and we made a demo with the three of us. We didn’t find a second guitarist until we found Morten in 2009.
2. How would you describe your sound?
We have a lot of different styles incorporated into our sound, so we are a bit hard to pin down exactly. We are rooted in death and thrash metal, and have a lot of mellow parts as well as some prog. People usually refer to us as progressive death metal, so we started using that as well. But we aren’t that progressive… so I guess we are melodic death/thrash with prog and a modern twist.
3. What bands/artists would you say have influenced your style of music?
I would say Opeth, Metallica, Machine Head, Devin Townsend and Pink Floyd.
4. Has the rise of YouTube & music streaming helped or hindered you as a band?
I think it has helped us being able to reach people all over the world, it makes the barrier to entry very low for people to listen to our music. But it has also made music extremely overpopulated, and being able to stand out is not easy. So I think it’s mostly good. But it has devalued music for a lot of people. But metal fans are great and value even smaller bands.
5. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not making music?
Outside of music it is video games. And it is a golden age for video games right now. The back catalogue just keeps growing! Right now I got back into Witcher 3 after watching the Netflix series.
6. What are your future plans musically? Tours?
We are doing more live shows after our drummer is done with wrist surgery. Very much looking forward to getting out there and play more of the new songs live. We will also start working on songs for the next album. Hope the wait won’t be as long this time. You can also look forward to more video content.
Thanks for your time!
