Album Review: Yours Truly – Toxic (UNFD)

Having endured an amount of internal turmoil that would have broken any partnership or creative dynamic, Yours Truly have instead found rejuvenation and a refreshed ambition for their art. With the band’s second studio record, ‘Toxic’, the Sydney-based outfit re- emerge with their most open, visceral and engaging material to date. It will be released on August 16th, 2024, via UNFD.

Yours Truly have found a way to use adversity to their musical advantage. Crafting a release based on feelings of anger, desperation, sadness, exhaustion, and acceptance. Crafting a release that is wholeheartedly them, but also a release that showcases a band looking to the future. You can’t keep a good band down, and Yours Truly are very good band.

The alternative rock/pop-punk are back with a powerful anthemic album and the passion is front and centre from the start with Back 2 U and Sour. Immediately, it’s clear that Yours Truly have poured a lot of emotion into these tracks. You can feel how much heart is in them, but also be acutely aware that they are so capable of making you move too, all while singing along loudly.

The vitality of this record is so important and that continues into the delightfully old-school pop-rock rager that is California Sober and the straight-up pop anthem that is Let Go. Both show that Yours Truly haven’t a lost step when it comes to making things feel bouncy and buoyant, even if the lyrical tone and style of vocals suggests otherwise.

The ability to appeal to those who want deep meaning behind their pop-punk and alt sounds and those who just want to move to something super catchy is a very strong aspect of this band. Hence a more dramatic track like All That I’m Not, a track like the eccentric Love Feels Like, and a track like the rhythmic foot-tapper that is Bloodshot Eyes all work. Each is special, but the latter’s chorus is such a damn singalong.

Keeping things lively and anthemic right to the end, Yours Truly continue to showcase fine examples of the modern genre-bending that exists in alternative rock. Blending even more powerful pop melodies with vigorous rock rhythms via a couple more bangers. Namely Sinking, Desaturated, and Call My Name, all crowd-pleasers and all with a statement of who Yours Truly are in 2024 and what they have survived to get to this point.
