Album Review: Wombbath – Choirs of the Fallen (Soulseller Records)
Nearly two years after The Great Desolation, Wombbath are back with their fourth full-length album Choirs Of The Fallen. Ten tracks of full force death metal mixed by Maestro Tomas Skogsberg at the legendary Studio Sunlight.
The new album comes with a new lineup. On guitar is Thomas Von Wachenfeldt, known from Wachenfeldt, session bass playing for Entombed, and his work arranging the Entombed Symphony. On bass we find Matthew Davidson. He took over the bass after Johan Momqvist left in early 2019. Matthew is known from Repulsive Vision where he plays guitar and Jon Rudin of Just Before Dawn has been punishing the drums with the band since 2018.
We have a very livid beast here, one with ten sharp bites liable to tear flesh and leave all in a bloody and death-inducing pile.
Making a hell of a racket, Wombbath draw from the old-school well of death metal. Where the members are just about in control of their instruments as they take on a life of their own. The sickening crunch of the drums, the cruelty of the riffs as they stab away with no mercy, the creeping horror of the bass and the inhumanity of the vocals. It’s such a dark and deep level of death metal that you can’t help but love it.
Tracks like Crawling from the Pits, A Sweet Tate of Death, A Vulgar Declaration and Wings of Horror aren’t going to leave you feeling good. Exactly as all great death metal should. You want to feel a little sick, a little abused and a little bit meaner. It’s the sort of chaotic heaviness that makes you feel grander and able to take on the world.
