Album Review: Wiegedood – There’s Always Blood at The End of The Road (Century Media Records)

Heinous, horrid black metal band Wiegedood return with a new disdain and hatred filled opus. Called ‘There’s Always Blood at The End of The Road’, it will be released on January 14th, 2022 via Century Media Records.

Urgh… this is nasty but if you revel in this, you’re going to adore this new album from Wiegedood. It is the stuff of nightmares, the sound of feverish hallucinations and the feeling of revulsion that comes over you upon experiencing something unfathomable.

A wailing cacophony of noise, Wiegedood unleash fire and brimstone across 9 slabs of intensity. From the simply irrational eruption that comes from FN SCAR 16. To the maddening battering driven by And in Old Salamano’s Room, The Dog Whimpered Softly. To the devilish and deviousness that is Noblesse Oblige Richesse Oblige. A ringing indictment of Wiegedood’s malevolent and twisted showcase of black metal.

A third of the album done and already, the brain has the feeling of mush. Such is the unmitigated and blistering sound that emanates from Wiegedood. Chaos that continues into the face-melting heat of Until It Is Not. Before an eerily-tinged intro gives a momentary chance to take a breather on Now Will Always Be. The longest track on the album at over 8-minutes, it transforms with the melody getting harsher. It is joined by pounding drums and horror-laden vocals. A difficult track to acclimatise too, it’s yet another showcase of uncomfortable and eclectic music from this band.

A little under 2 minutes long, Wade is just simple guitar plucking that has a mild ‘out of tune’ quality to it as though Wiegewood are getting their energies in line. Which makes the sudden classic horror-movie flip at the end even more baffling. It’s not like it flows into Nuages either as that track explodes into black metal pandemonium.

Two tracks left of this extremely challenging but fascinating listen and it’s even more scorching noise with Theft and Begging. Before the darkness fully envelops on the closer of Carousel. An apt title as it does feel like being on some sort of demonic ride that is out of control. Spinning wildly around, witnessing the cackling faces that watch with glee from the gloom.
