Album Review: Weathers – Are We Having Fun? (Sumerian Records)

Alternative pop-rockers Weathers will release ‘Are We Having Fun?’, their new album, and first release via Sumerian Records, on the 5th of May 2023.

Yes Weathers, we are having fun and you can take all of the blame for that because of this album. A pop-rock delight, sweet, with a ton of depth, honesty, and emotion, all with this underlying rawness that makes the whole rockier vibe stronger overall.

Beginning this new album with an anthem that touches the soul, Weathers are off and rolling with One of a Kind. A track that features an absolute sing-along of a chorus. Though that is ‘par for the course’ with this band as they deliver massive infectious efforts time and time again. The modern pop-style of ALL CAPS, the synthy eccentricities of She Hates Me, the ‘old school’ grin-inducing I’m Just Sayin’, and the foot-tapping hip-hop infusion that is Where Do I Sign?

The first half of the record is wonderfully fun and shows that Weathers wholly understand how to make the contradiction of catchiness and rawness work to their advantage. Their passion is put to good use and the balance of pop and rock is pretty much spot on. You wouldn’t dare not hear what comes next.

Which is Nothing to Say, a track with brighter melodies and a chorus that is simply enormous. Followed then by something more melodramatic, but equally as unforgettable in Carsick. Before the dance floor explodes with the body-mover that is Drama Queen, and the old school pop-rockers get to have their fun again with the hearty chorus of Take Me Home.

Never lethargic, even when upping the mellow aspect of their sound, as they do on the mournful Goodbye to My Friends. Weathers do an excellent job of holding attentions right up to the very end. Which just so happens to come in the form of a one last rocking number called Little Castaway.
