Album Review: Waykopp – Too Loud? Too Old! (LGSR)
Waykopp are a pop-punk band founded in 2013 in the city of Pau (France). Animated by the spirit of Californian bands from the end of the 90s (Green Day, Blink-182, Weezer …), Jon (Guitar/Lead Vocals) Lord M (Bass/Vocals) and President GG (Drums/Vocals) are the three teenagers composing this surprising power-trio!
Their debut album, Too Loud? Too Old! was released on September 21st 2018.
Amongst the chatter of people, the melody and drum beat get things started in Too Loud?… The light and airy tune reminiscent of a warm Summer’s day, a nice drink and good company. The perfect image for a pop-punk band to conjure up.
It’s hard to not draw comparisons to some of the big-hitters in the pop-punk world. In particular Blink 182 on Kings of Yesterday and the more melodic oddities of Weezer on Gold Face. These are upbeat and sweet sounding tunes that you can rock out too as well as dance.
Then there are the faster tracks like Insomnia. That add some snarl and bite to the vocals, a highlight of the album but nowhere as exciting as Go On. That rack has the catchiest rhythm of the entire album, the guitars absolutely soar.
It’s not all upbeat rock though as I’m Gone shows some emotional depth in the band. With touching lyrics about loss and melancholic melody. It’s the start of a strong run of tracks leading towards the album’s end. Good Times is wonderfully pleasing, You Don’t Even Know My Name is simple and refined before …Too Old! ends things in noisy fashion.
As pop-punk as they come. Waykopp have used their inspirations to create a fun, bouncy and breezy soundtrack to good times.
